The Guchengzhai Site

Date Posted: 2024-11-13

The Guchengzhai site is located in the Guchengzhai Group, Dafanzhuang Village, Quliang Town, Xinmi, Henan province, on the terrace on the east bank of the Zhen River. The existing area covers 270,000 square meters. The Guchengzhai site is one of the well-preserved late Longshan Culture city sites in China, with a rectangular plane and an area of about 176,000 square meters. Except for the western city wall, which was washed away by the Zhen River, the northern, eastern, and southern sections of the city wall have been very well preserved. The gap in the middle of the southern and northern city walls might be the location of the gate at that time. The rammed earth building site group discovered in the city has both practical and spiritual aspects, indicating the strict social management and orderly hierarchy; Its architectural form and construction characteristics provide an opportunity to explore the origin of palace architecture in the Xia and Shang dynasties, which is of great significance for exploring the complicated process of society and early Xia culture in the Central Plains region of China.
