The International Youth Salon (Session 1) Held Successfully

To broaden academic horizons, establish a regular exchange platform for archaeology professionals, and promote mutual learning across regions, Henan Provincial Institute of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (HPICHA) successfully hosted the first session of the International Youth Salon on June 8th.

Four outstanding young scholars were invited to deliver keynote speeches: Professor Zhang Ran from Durham University in the UK, Professor Su Xin from the University of Hong Kong, Tao Yuqing, a PhD candidate at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA, and Song Zhenmin, a staff member of the Xia Culture Research Center of HPICHA. A large number of core researchers and young staff from the HPICHA attended the event for exchanges.

The scholars presented reports based on their respective research fields and practical achievements. Professor Zhang Ran focused on the study of ancient ceramics, and elaborated on trade development and cultural integration across Eurasia in the early medieval period. Professor Su Xin discussed pottery handicrafts and analyzed the internal connections between resources, the environment and ancient societies. Drawing on the overseas study experience, Tao Yuqing shared research on grotto archaeology and the innovative application of artificial intelligence technology in field investigations. Song Zhenmin introduced major archaeological discoveries and the latest research findings of the Zhengzhou Shang Dynasty City Site.

Following the keynote speeches, an interactive discussion session was held. Participants raised questions actively and engaged in in-depth discussions with the guests concerning research methodologies, technological application, fieldwork and cross-border academic cooperation, creating a strong academic atmosphere.

Featuring rich content and diverse perspectives, this salon integrated cutting-edge theories, technological applications and field practices. It effectively facilitated idea exchanges and experience sharing among young archaeology scholars worldwide. Going forward, HPICHA will continue to organize a series of academic salons, further strengthen international academic exchanges, and contribute to the high-quality development of archaeology.
